Your status survives a job change
Employer-sponsored residence is cancelled when employment ends, and a new employer starts the process again. Self-sponsored residence simply continues.
Every UAE residence visa hangs on a sponsor, and that sponsor is either your employer, your own company, or you. Everything else — duration, renewal, what happens when the job ends — follows from that single fact.
| Route | Sponsor | Typical validity | Tied to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employment | Your employer | 2 years, sometimes 3 | The job — it ends when the contract does |
| Investor / partner | Your own company | 2 to 3 years | The trade licence staying active |
| Property owner | Yourself | 2 years | Completed, registered property |
| Green Residence | Yourself | 5 years | Skill, freelance permit or partnership |
| Golden Residence | Yourself | 5 or 10 years | Category: investment, talent, study |
| Retirement | Yourself | 5 years | Age 55+, work history, financial criteria |
| Student | University or resident parent | Duration of study | Enrolment |
| Family | A resident relative | Matches the sponsor | The sponsor's own status |
Four practical differences, and none of them are about prestige.
Employer-sponsored residence is cancelled when employment ends, and a new employer starts the process again. Self-sponsored residence simply continues.
No employer approval, no salary-threshold arguments with a company that would rather not deal with it.
Five or ten years instead of two. Renewal is a real administrative task each time, so the difference is not only symbolic.
A standard residence is cancelled automatically after roughly six months outside the country. Long-term Golden Residence is exempt from that rule — which matters if you actually live elsewhere part of the year.
Published criteria exist, but they are revised regularly — sometimes more than once a year. Treat the figures below as the shape of the requirement, and confirm the current wording with the issuing authority before you plan around it.
The widely cited property threshold is AED 2 million of registered real estate. Business routes reference capital of similar scale, or a contribution to an establishment paying a substantial amount in annual taxes. In early 2026 the previous down-payment condition for property investors was removed, so mortgaged and off-plan property can now count toward the threshold — an example of how fast this moves.
Three groups: skilled employees with a degree and a salary threshold in the region of AED 15,000 a month; freelancers with a permit and annual income around AED 360,000; and investors or partners with a qualifying stake. Availability of this category has varied, so check whether applications are currently open.
Separate from Golden Residence and shorter — around two years. Dubai relaxed the minimum property value for sole owners in 2026, while joint owners still need a minimum share each, and other emirates set their own rules.
From age 55 with a long work history, then one of several financial conditions: property plus savings, or a stated annual income. Dubai runs its own programme with a higher income bar than the federal one.
Medical testing, biometrics, Emirates ID and health insurance apply on every route. Those steps are done in person and cannot be delegated.
An employer-sponsored residence is cancelled, and a grace period follows in which you either find a new sponsor or leave. This is the single strongest argument for a self-sponsored route if you can qualify for one.
It gives a route, not an automatic grant. The property must be completed and registered, and the length of the visa depends on its value and on the emirate's current rules.
Yes, on standard routes: roughly six months of continuous absence cancels it. Long-term Golden Residence does not carry that restriction.
No. It is long-term and renewable, but it is still a residence permit with conditions, not citizenship and not permanent status.
Employment, because the employer runs the process. Self-sponsored routes take longer because you assemble the evidence yourself — and that is precisely what makes them durable.
Check them. Thresholds and categories in the UAE are revised often, and a guide written six months ago can be wrong in specifics while still being right in structure.
Write rather than call: your situation comes down to a handful of facts — current status, employer or company, property, income, family — and in a message they stay written down and checkable. The reply comes back as text you can forward to a lawyer or an accountant.
